A little bit more about clinics with migrants
By: Bruno Mareto
I'm a Brazilian psychoanalyst, a psychologist licensed in Brazil, I've been practising for almost 10 years and I've been a migrant for over 5 years.
For some time now, I've been studying the psychic effects of migration, in other words, how it affects our mental health and subjectivity. This research has transformed both my personal experience as a migrant and my work with patients who have left their country or city of origin.
Migration, when a "free" choice, is often seen as an exciting and uniquely positive experience. However, the reality is that it can be much more complex and challenging than it seems. When migration is not "free", its difficulties are often greater and even more obvious. In any case, recognising and understanding that moving to another country or city is complex usually makes the experience of migration much easier.
Psychoanalysis - or therapy in general - is one of the most valuable resources for dealing with difficult feelings and sensations, such as anxiety, sadness, grief, confusion, paralysing doubt, fear, loneliness, among other things that are not exclusive to migrants/expatriates, but which can affect us more intensely.
It is also in therapy that we can have a space to think, talk about and create our experience in the world, inventing and/or sustaining choices, paths, ways of existing.
In my practice, I offer online and face-to-face sessions in English, Portuguese and Spanish for adults, teenagers and couples - whether they are migrants/expatriates or not.
